Doing a bit of web search today I find that 10.0.0.1 is a normal default IP address for gateways and routers but not usually of the consumer/home network variety. Since I can get there fine via wireless with the laptop but not the desktop and going through all of the above routines I am drawn to the possible conclusion that I have a hardware problem, i.e. the network adapter has somehow gone bad. Is there any way to test or confirm or disprove this? The hardware manager in XP identifies the adapter and doesn't report it a problem.
