jerky laptop with battery in

Hi,

My daughter has a acer aspire laptop the other day the lid was slammed shut on it quite hard. now the laptop runs very jerky ie. the mouse pointer stutters when scrolling across the screen, programs take an age to open, it takes a long time to boot, when typing somthing in to a type box there is a massive delay before the characters are displayed on screen amongs other things. if i take the battery out and plug the laptop in everything works fine. i know this probably points to the battery being damaged but at £50 for a new one i don't want to buy one if it could be something else. if the battery is damaged why would it make everything run so slowly even when plugged in with the battery inserted.

thanks for any help in advance
