There are not very many other things that I can think of that would make the computer boot (or at least have its fans running) but the monitor receives no signal. I suppose that, being plugged into the wall as well, the monitor could have been damaged as is failing at times. However, I have seen power supplies damaged much easier than monitors as they are more fragile components.
