Dunedin, thanks. I did remember that I had run an itunes update before I rebooted last, so in the F8 menu, I chose "use last known good configuration" and got it to work. I had a double problem actually - I have the seemingly common ac adapter issue with my Dell Inspiron 1501. I did order a new adapter which arrived yesterday, and now I'm keeping a charge. Hopefully, that will last!

I do still need to go in and turn off the automatic reboot! Thanks for that info.
