HP prevents Standby & Shut down

Hi all,
Here's the problem. My new HP F2180 all-in-one (why did I ever buy this thing!) has been having functional problems since I bought it last week.

Now, (1) my Windows Explorer in XP SP2 wont open files (that's another issue)

AND

I get delays and sometimes errors to turn off the computer. Error messsages (to shut off the device) come up each time. Sometimes the computer can close, sometimes the error message hangs it.
