thank you for this clue, but this seems not to be so easy as it seems.
When I had a look at the list of installed programs in the section "software" in the system control panel then, in the MS section of the list, I'm confronted with a long list of entries labelled with "Hotfix" plus a KBxxxxxx identifier which means nothing to me. There is nowhere some entry like Windows XP service pack 3 or something similiar.
So I still have the problem and even more worse:
After this disaster is resisted the temptation to install some pre-realease sp3 on my older backup PC. Today I started that machine the first time after 2 weeks and chose windows update.
There I was offered to install sp3 and the whole installation including re-registration went smoothly. No complains so far.
On the other hand, on my main PC I did not get this offer when I chose windows update. Windows update stubbornly only offers me the update I talked about in my inital posting and NOTHING else. And the installation still fails.
I grow desperate about this affair.
Can some friendly soul help me out of this sh** please??
