Check your motherboard manual to see if the PCIE slots are 2.0 or earlier. Some older Asus motherboards with PCIE 1.0 had trouble supporting the new 2.0 versions of PCIE graphics cards, but this has been fixed with BIOS updates.
I had this same problem when I bought an 8800GT PCIE2 for my old Asus PCIE1 motherboard. At the time there were no BIOS updates available so I upgraded the mobo to a newer one that support 2.0 cards.
As far as I know it's ok to use PCIE 2.0 cards on all Asus motherboards now, but check with the supplier before buying just to make sure.
