Thanks for your reply. That sounds like a serious problem.

I am able to access safe mode and safe mode with networking support (I am using the machine in safe mode to access this forum now).

I have followed the link you kindly posted but can't see any reference to the hot-key you mentioned. It just seems to be a CNet review of the Travelmate 8215wlmi and although I've read it, it didn't seem to mention how to reset to factory settings.
