Alright, I've found a solution to the problem. For anyone else that might have this problem:

I was correct, the 64 bit version's registry keys are not the same as the 32 bit vista version. The only difference, though, is that their located under different root folders. If you're running 64 bit and you want to disable the default compressor, do it the manual way (open Regedit), but instead of looking for the keys in the root folders stated in the tutorial, click on the Edit tab, and click find (or press Ctrl+F) and copy and paste the two keys stated in the tutorial. Delete them, restart, and you're done.
