Can it be my Hard drive that's not letting my comp boot up?

  • Here's what happened : I bought a new Sapphire X1650PRO 512MB DDR2 512MB AGP 8x/4x from newegg.com. I've done plently of research before buying it ; for example, i know my D865PERL intel MOBO can support a .8/ 1.5 voltage 4x/8x video card. i have a 350 PSU, which is enough for the x1650PRO.
  • I put in this video card..i hook it up with the 4 pin power connector with this 3 way plug thing it has..one 4 PIN to the video card, to the hard drive, and to the PSU.

You must know that my monitor has two types of led light that indicates standby mode/off OR on. The yellow light means it's on, the green light means it's off.

Well, after putting in the AGP X1650PRO into the AGP slot, very securely, i TURN on my computer, and my monitor just shows black. It has nothing on the screen. The LED LIGHT of the monitor is YELLOW (meaning its on standby or the computer isn't booting)

My monitor is WHITE if it is not connected to the video card. However, when i plug back in the monitor to the VGA, it is black, indicating that, in FACT, my video card does work. It does this with both my OLD video card AND <new> video card.

So, i'm thinking, wth is wrong? I tried it again..nothing.. my monitor is acting as if it is not reading a computer.

I know my monitor isn't broken because i have also tried putting in my old video card..my comp still doesnt work. What do i mean by it doesnt work? i mean even when i turn on the monitor, it just stays at the yellow light instead of turning green and botting up like normal.

Here's what we have : i insert in my old video card after that to determine if it was the NEW, X1650PRO that was damaged and not letting any display on the screen come on. WRONG. Because with my old video card, my computer isn't booting at all anymore either!

To investigate furthur, i checked my hard disk drive. Because, it could've been that my HDD is dead. But i don't think so. Because i put my ear up to it while the computer is on, and i can hear the FAN and MOTOR still running inside the Hard Drive.

My computer usually makes a "BEEP" noise, if it boots up SUCCESSFuLLY ( which it does NOT anymore)
  • Is having a beep noise on a normality that indicates successful initiation ?
  • Because i have no more BEEPING noise.

Yes, my MOBO led light (which is green) is STILL ON whenver i turn the computer on. If it wasn't, i'd be sure my MOBO was dead.

Everything is plugged, secure, all that jib jab. Ive tuirned it on and off thousands of times n still no green light on the monitor and sucessful boot up.

You might think that, hm maybe it's my PSU that CANNOT handle my new x1650PRO?>? Nope. I thought so too. Becuase my computer does not successfully boot up anymore EVEN with my OLD Radeon 9250 AGP.

So, after all of this, i've come down to two possiblities. My MOTHERBOARD OR HARD DRIVE is dead.

Remember, i know it's not my new video card that's the problem. Because my computer wont even boot up properly anymore with the OLD video card. It;s like, after hooking up my new vid card, my computer decides not to boot up anymore. even with the old VGA. Yes,
Two questions must be answered. Yes, everything seems to be running fine, all fans running nicely, cpu running with heat sink and fan running, ect..cd drives and DVD drive running..ect
  1. Even if the MOTHERBOARD's LED light is still on and stable, IS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT IT'S DEAD OR SHORT CIRCUITED OR w/e anyway?

  1. Even if my HARD DRIVE MOTOR IS STILL WORKING AND SPINNING, is there STIL A POSSIBILITY THAT MY HARD DRIVE IS DEAD OR w/e?
