If you're connecting from work to the home machine, there should be no need to tinker with the work network. I'm assuming that there are no unusual firewall restrictions on outgoing traffic at work, obviously I don't know that to be a fact. I think I'd consider either an FTP server like
FileZilla on the home machine, or perhaps a remote control application like
UltraVNC if you think you'd like to be able to control the desktop.
