Apologies for me thinking that you cannot boot to Vista. I have misread the thread.
In this MS doc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366/en-us it also shows the steps on how to install SP1. i think these steps are worth a try too. i tried to search also on the error that you got but i always end up with 'asking MS for help' or to install SP1 via the windows update. there seems to be no solid conclusion or clear cut solution to the problem as of the moment. i am thinking if a fresh install of Vista could help but you could also lose your personal files in the process.

I just have a system repair that only seem to fix the boot file for vista but does not repair vista system files !

On the upside , in the last couple of weeks I've learnt more about my comp than I would have if it was running correctly !
