Dell Inspiron 6400 help?

When I start my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop it says that Windows XP Professional is starting up and then gives me a log in window (something that has never been there before). My name is in the user name box but since I have never set up a password, I just hit OK and it logs in. It says loading your personal settings and my desktop background comes up but no icons or start bar or anything else. The mouse is there and I can move it around but nothing else seems to be on my computer. After a minute or so I get an Application Error Message. It says:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application.

If I click OK or the X it goes away and I'm left once again with just my background and mouse.

I tried to use the Dell website for help, and ran a DST Status test. I don't know what any of this means. The test failed and I got an error code.

Error Code: 1000-0146
Unit 0: IDE Status Failed

I ran some other tests that were on the available menu and got the following error codes:

Error Code: 0F00:1344
Msg. Block 1840874, 1840875, 1840876

and
Error Code: 0F00:136c
IDE Device Failed

Is there any hope for it?
