hard drive issues

hey I got a problem. I just bought a western digital caviar 250gb hd and it is sata II, and my motherboard is old and only had ide connectors so i had to buy a converter. on bootup the primary IDE shows the WD 2500aks model number and when I go into the BIOS it shows up with the number of heads and the landing zone, however it says main disk boot error (I have it set to primary) and when I tried to boot windows from CD it says there is no HD installed. I plugged my old IDE hard drive into the secondary IDE slot and pulled up windows from there and in my computer and in comp mgmt it only shows my old HD not the new one. I would suspect that there was a problem with the converter or something but it shows up in the bios and the detected drives at the beginning. any ideas?
