ok i guess i'll go for the format option with disk management.

The HDD's just for external data storage, so i'm not sure why i need to boot the computer from a CD.

Thanks anyway for saving my neck, without your advice about getdataback i wouldn't have known how to get the data out of that hard drive.

I'll just try to format it in disk management and hope it works afterwards

*EDIT: I think you think the HD has my OS on it? It doesn't, its just an external HD with data on it. Does that change anything?
