[SOLVED] new pc not connecting to network

hi,

i just finished building my new pc and i am having trouble connecting to my network, at first i thought it might be cos dhcp is disabled i know it use to be so i set my ip address and dns servers up, and the PC will connect to the network but not give me internet or allow me to browse the network. if i tell my pc to look for dhcp nothing happens full stop or it will connect to the network but with a completely wrong ip and subnet mask, i cannot figure it out at all...

pc specs are as follows

core2 duo 2.66Ghz
Asus p5n-3 sli
2 geforce 9600GT's
4Gb corsair xms 2 800mhz
500gb hdd
dvd rw
700w psu
Windows XP media center edition 2005 (no updates as of yet due to lack of internet)

thanks for your time.

dan
