XP and Vista 32-bit installations cap at 3.5GB, so you probably have 256MB reserved for video use. Yes, it is the maximum you can take, though putting in more doesn't actually hurt the system (it just doesn't use it). If there's money involved in staying under the limit, by all means sell those bad boys.

Know that you can use the full 4GB in a Vista 32-bit environment, but a similar workaround has not been introduced for XP, to the best of my knowledge.

You can also install a 64-bit operating system if you're so inclined.
