Sounds like you might have a SATA drive but no SATA driver installed ... you'll need to check your Install CD that came with your motherboard or use an SP1 / SP2 version of the XP CD.
as you boot you'll note that there's a prompt at the bottom of the screen that says to press F6 to install any drivers ( sorry don't remember the exact expression .. but it's just after all the files start to load from the CD and way before you get to the point where they ask you what you want to do. Have the driver ready on the Motherboard installation CD or a Floppy Diskette for the install package to find, when asked
