Idea IP addressing and subnets

Hi,

I have a strange problem. I have a intern network. All addresses are 10.0.x.x and the gateway is 10.0.0.1. All with subnetmask 255.255.248.0
In this way I could go to 10.0.7.254 with the ip-addresses for the clients. But, this is not enough anymore .....
I changed the subnetmask to 255.255.240.0 with the thought I could go to 10.0.15.254. But, there is a problem. First I forgot to change the subnetmask of the gateway. So, the client with ip-addresses 10.0.8.x and higher couldn't get out to the internet. Ok, my fault.
Now I changed the subnetmask of the gateway to 255.255.240.0 and guess what? No internet at all at any client.
Is there someone who can explain this to me?
