I have the same version of Ubuntu you mentioned: Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop.
I got the ISO from
www.ubuntu.com and burned it and installed it on a new drive. I did not install any additional drivers, it just worked with whatever Ubuntu came with by default. Meaning I just plugged in an Ethernet cable and I was immediately connected to my network with no issues/problems.
