SATA master + ATA slave
Is this possible? My grandmother recently bought a new dell running Vista that uses an SATA drive as a master drive. Her old computer died after motherboard failure. However, the old hard drive, a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 200GB should still be functional. She wants to use the old hard drive as a slave drive in the new system. However, that old drive uses an IDE/ATA connection. The motherboard in the new PC, a Foxconn G33M02, has an ATA connector. Should it work fine to connect the old ATA drive as a slave to the new, master SATA drive? I'm no expert on hard drives, so I just wanted to make sure it would work. I would imagine you would just remove the jumper on the old drive, setting it to slave, and attach it to the slave part of the IDE cable. Would this work? Would you have to install any drivers or anything if you didn't want to boot off the drive?
