Thanks fixmypc, the power ratings of the two adaptors are near identical but by going to the other end of the house and conencting via a 30 metre ethernet cable, the problem is fixed! There is a slight improvement with using a 3m cable over a 1.8 but still unusable. Also, since my post I found that the adaptor does not affect the use of the wireless connection so that works fine. Problem is that the most important use of my laptop is in my office near the modem which is not wireless. I will try another adaptor before buying a wireless modem! I would be interested in your reasoning behind making the suggestion about distance and what you think my findings mean in terms of what the cause of the problem is. Cheers
