Compaq Armada E500 Charging Problem

Hey,

I recently bought a Compaq Armada E500 Laptop, only to discover there appears to be some kind of problem with charging the battery. It arrived pretty much fully charged, but I haven't managed to get it recharged once it was depleted. Plugging in the AC adapter allows the laptop to be run from an outlet, but whether the laptop is switched on or off, the charging LED is only on intermittently for a few seconds at a time, and the battery doesn't get any more charged.

So, is this likely to be a problem with the battery or the charging circuit? Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is there a way of fixing it without going to an expensive repair place?

If it helps, I'm well practiced at building and fixing desktops, but this is the first laptop I've ever owned.

Thanks for any help,
Rob x
