Inspiron 6000 Power Problems

My Inspiron 6000 laptop has been randomly shutting down for the past month and a half.

While the laptop will power on when the adapter is plugged in, if I take the battery out it only comes on for a second. Similarly, if I do not plug it in and try to run it just on battery power it does not work. I need the laptop to be plugged in and still have the battery in.

It usually starts working again if I take out the battery and unplug the computer, wait (30 minutes to an hour), and then put it back in. However, it has been shutting down more frequently than before.

I cannot tell if there is a problem with the battery, adapter, or motherboard. My warranty with Dell was up a year ago and I do not want to pay over a $100 for a call. Also, there was a battery recall on my comp and they have not sent it in 2 months, even though they said it would take 20 days.

I do not want to buy any new parts, or fix anything on the computer, if the cost is going to be hundreds of dollars. In that case I will just buy a new one.

What should I do?
