Problem with Windows

Hi, a couple of months ago a S.M.A.R.T error poped up while starting up my pc which is a labtop aspire 1640 acer, inter 915 grahpics, seagate hardrive 100 gig and 1 gig ram. Regarding the error it said to replace the hard drive cause failure of such was iminent, i didnt read much into it, cause S.M.A.R.T error as i was told and investigated isnt a sure thing, anyway now for some time my computer when i put music or any kind of media its slows down the pc almost to a hault, and while listening to or watching and video i open any other program the pc goes almost to a hault to, sound drags, everthing drags and 100% usage, ive re-installed windows xp pro about 6 times, so i doubt its any virus or spyware. so basicaly what i wanted to ask is, it it time to buy a new hard disk?

Ps: curiosuly enough sometimes it doesnt do anything and runs as a normal pc should
