What type of drive is it. IDE,SATA? If it is IDE (Uses wide ribbon cable) it won't need drivers. Usually the only difference in OEM and retail is packaging and maybe warrantee.
That error usually means that the jumpers on the drive are not correct. You don't say how you are using it. Please let us know what kind of drive it is and is it a second drive?
Are you trying to load an Operating system on it?
