Cry Missing files in a folder.

Hi there I'm new to this site and in hope of finding help to solving my problem.

I share the computer with my sister, we haven't had internet for a while so I hadn't bothered to scan for a period.
So one day I come home and try to play music on iTunes and BAM there's an error of a missing file. I look in the folder where all the music is and everything has dissappeared. 10 gigs has freed up on the partitioned disk and ya, chaos ensues. not to me but my sister.

How did this happen and more importantly, can I restore all the files in the folder?

Note: Not only in this folder, other minor files are missing in other folders but I haven't completely checked it all out.
Also can a virus do this? a recent scan only showed worms, but I'm not too sure.

Help PLEASE! and thanks for reading. :]
