Re: Unlocking file sharing for Program Files

Hi Twig1983. . .

I don't believe it is possible to share the entire c: drive or the entire Program Files folder in Vista because of sub-folders/files in each of which you (the user name you logged on with) are not the owner of, not to mention files within each whose attributes are system and/or hidden. The "<access denied>" screen that came up is a product of Vista's User Access Control (UAC).

However, there are usually ways around any rule.

A few questions first, please. . .

1. Are these PC's XP-> Vista upgrades, or new Vista installations?

2. When you elected the share, were you logged on with an admin account?

3. Is the admin account that you use one that was set up at the time of the Vista installation?

4. Is the user account on PC#2 an admin account or a standard user account (that you are using and get <access denied>)?

5. Do you get the <access denied> message simply trying to read the folder/file from PC#2? What about during program execution?

6. Prior to the <access denied> message, is there a UAC prompt?

7. Yes >> Does it ask for a password, or can you simply select "Continue"?

8. Are you sure that it is the Program Files folder you are failing on or could it be the ProgramData folder (which the Program Files folder uses for most of its non source-code data under Vista)?

9. Have you looked at the Event Viewer?

10. Is it necessary to elect to share the entire c: drive and Program Files folder or just faster (rather than changing each applicable folder)?

11. What about other folders like ProgramData that is used during program execution? (ProgramData is a hidden folder).

Thanks.

regards. . .
