I think the HD died. It was working before and now it doesn't and nothing was done to change it. Since you cloned the 120 from the 40, then everything was communicating OK. You did everything right and a few days later it quits. Infantile suicide. If something is going to quit it will happen in the first month.
The boot from the network happens because the 120 was not found so the bios tries to find the operating system out on the network. It didn't so it quits after a while. Booting from the network is different that getting the IP address from the DHCP server on your router.
Take the 120 out of the computer and put it in another and see if it boots. If it does it will probably boot and then give the "blue screen of death" at some point because it was setup for the Compac EVO and it is a good disk. If it doesn't boot something is probably wrong with the disk.
