Ok, can I know what is the printer model? Maybe I can provide the driver link for the printer, so that you can download and install on her laptop

Ok, this seems like one of the Vista issue. You might need to right click on the file, and choose Run as administrator, and see whether its let you install the software then

Did you tried to plug your external hard drive to any other laptop before? Is your external drive have its own power supply? This is seems like a power issue here
