Well my old laptop has its monitor spoilt for unknown reason, perhaps bcuz of old age. So i did like what you thought could be done, plugging the laptop to a external monitor but then i didn't need to do any screen refresh or settings on the laptop

Just hit the special button on the laptop that tell the laptop to display its display outwards. Dun know if i am making sense. It is like when u plug you laptop to a projector and hit the special button (need to refer to manual for that as each laptop has a different button).
