Computer is not recognizing DVD/CD-ROM Drive

I have a Toshiba A15 series laptop, 'til roughly three days ago the computer was able to "rip" cd's, recognized that it had a cd-rom drive. Now, the computer doesn't recognize the cd-rom drive. The D:/Drive doesn't appear in my computer, only the c, and e drives appear. I have tried un-installing the drivers, and installing new ones, however this has failed. Also, I've noted that the cd-rom drive as of July '07 was unable to burn cd's. Could someone tell me what is causing the problem.
