Laptop Slow

Hi,
I have a HP- Compaq NC2400 Laptop. It comes with a Intel Core Duo U 2500 processor @ 1.2ghz, Ram of 1 GB and HDD of 60GB. there are 2 partitions on the hdd one for the recovery and the balance is one partition where the OS (WIn xpp service pack 2) and all the other data/softwares reside. Other than this I have also installed Office 2007 and use the Outlook client for official mails.
The problem is that the system is quite slow and some time freezes for a couple of seconds even on normal functions.
I have a anti defrag software from Diskkeeper installed and do a defrag regularly despite which the speed is not imporving. Currently around 60% of the hdd space is used up.
Kindly advise what may be the problem for the machine being slow and propose a solution.

Anil
