xp home oem key issues

Hi all,

I have a laptop that had a copy of windows XP home edition oem. So when you boot up the computer it asks you to put in the key from the certificate. Well I had done that and while it was registering the key the computer shut off due to low battery power. So now when I boot up again and enter the key it tells me its an invalid key. I called microsoft to validate the key for me and what they did was give me a new key but even that key it will not accept. IS it possible that the install is messed up now and wont accept any keys? How can i resolve this without reinstalling windows?

Thanks!
