Well I'll be damned, I was typing my message with all the info you asked for and left the cable plugged in (tried for last few days to make it work!) and then bam! I'm not touching anything and that balloon pops in saying I'm connected.
Anyway, fyi, the local area connection still shows 'limited or no connectivity'. I installed the connection software provided by my friend's internet provider and tried for a few days, but always got a 'Error 678' message every time.
So no idea why it just decided to work all of a sudden.
Using Windows XP Home Ed, SP2, a Realtk TRL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC is installed.
Modem is some aging NEC NTA-3110, plugged in using WLAN socket.
