ah, I think I accidently found the solution. It turns out my battery no longer works, I didn't realise coz my laptop's just been sitting at my desk for about 2 weeks now using the power from the wall. I should've really got a desktop, I thought I'd move it around more. So, maybe not enough power is getting through to power all the strenous processes involved in complicated games. It's good I don't have to go through the hassle of downloading COD4 again now. I'll hand it in to be repaired and let you know if it works.
