Hello and welcome to the TSF, sounds like you have two problems, one, the power jack came loose and is in need of resoldering (repairshop). Two, it also sounds as if you are overheating, though until the power jack is fixed you can't really tell. If you take it to a shop for repair, you can also ask them to check the security of the heatsink.
Laptop batteries don't last for very long, especially the older ni-cads, the newer Li batteries are much better, but remaining uncharged for a year or more will more than likely kill either one (they should be stored charged, and pereiodically recharged every month or so to keep them okay)
