internet connection randomly gives up??

as it says, my internet connection randomly quits, whether i am surfing the internet or not even in the same room as my computer.

this is sometimes accompanied by a false "cable has been unplugged" message, or a random restart by the system, after which it helpfully tells me it has recovered from a serious error.

by clicking repair in network connections, the system cannot renew my IP address.

the only way to regain the connection to the network is to shut off power completely and reboot.

i am connected to the internet by ethernet going to a port at 100 mbps. there are 2 other computers on this network.

also, about every other time i start internet explorer, it "unexpectedly quits" and i have to start it again.

???

any help?

thanks in advance.
