Connected, but no net activity?

I know a considerable amount about computers networking etc. and this one even has me stumped.

Here's the situation,
I was fixing a friends computer, finished, went back onto my system, when to run, msconfig, startup, and disabled the 1 program that wasn't necessary. Following this i went and changed it to normal startup, just to see what would happen, figuring that i could just switch it back. This, evidently, didn't work. During this switching process, and after clicking restart, a box popped up saying there had been alot of hardware changes, and that i needed to validate my windows. I didn't really care, as it is a simple phone call, but when my computer came up, i connected to my net (which actually connected), double clicked on mozilla, and it doesn't display the page. I also can't connect to AIM, steam, etc. and the net just isn't working, even though it says it is connected. I checked the send/recieve packets on the net and it was at an extremely low number after a few minutes (maybe 3-5), only at around 30.

I have ran virus scan, checked drivers, updated everything, etc. and have kept very good care of my computer in that regard.

The only thing i still haven't tried is DL'ing the patch for SP 2 which was released with the low connectivity bug, and i wont be able to try it till tommorow.

Any ideas?
Any comments?

Everything and anything would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
