It depends on the device and what it is programmed to to under these conditions. My advice would be to expect the worse and take precautions - back up ;)
What you could do is test it. Copy off the important data and check the copy is ok. Unplug the drive and plug it back in again.
My guess would be that all will be well, because usually the USB controller firmware (in the case) will look at the flags in the encryption descriptor sectors and determine that the drive is already encrypted.
