Laptop screen turns OFF at normal brightness level

I have a DELL Inspiron E1505 I bought last April. Since last week, the laptop screen turns off a few seconds after it boots or resumes. I did some diagnosis and found it to be related to LCD brightness level.

If I start the laptop without the power cord connected, the laptop screen stays on. If I increase the brightness level, the screen makes a hissing sound and turns off in few seconds.

If I start the laptop with power cord connected, the screen makes a hissing sound and turns off in a few seconds. If I manage to reduce the LCD brightness during this time, the screen stays on.

Anyone have any idea how can I go about fixing this problem?

Thanks in advance.
