memory ram slot not recognized

Hi! I have a toshiba P30 laptop and long ago I bought and extra memory RAM module of 1G and i recognized it without problems. Then few days ago I check the slots and took the Ram out to clean as I was having some overheating problems and reinstalled them again. After that it would only recognize the slot on the bottom (it has two slots one on the top of another). I tried switching the modules and I placed the 512 at the bottom which recognized without problem but the 1G on the top would not display on system properties. how could I make the computer recognize the 2 modules like it use to? can't be modules problem because when I switch them they work properly, but the slot on the top doesn't seem to work...
