Thanks very much for your time. I have reset WINSOCK entries & reset the TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, and rebooted the pc as you advised and this didn't resolve my problem.
I have also connected my laptop via its ethernet connection using the ethernet cable for the main PC. This worked so proving that the cable or router are not the problem. Therefore my next step is to buy a new NIC and see if that resolves the problem. I'll report back when I have installed it and let you know whether it resolves the problem.
