Ok, after further reading of my manual and random google sources I need to enable AHCI for full SATA2 and NCQ support which apparently needs a driver on windows install which probably means I might have to format the drives which I really don't want to do.

So, does vista need drivers on install? and would I lose data on drives if I just change it to AHCI?
