Let me provide more information and an update. Windows XP Home sp2 is my operating system. I downloaded MaxBlaster which reports many bad sectors when it tries to create the sole partition. I stop it after three hours and it has not completed the format. The bad sectors start at sector 1194 and go on for a while.

Is this drive toast? Or is there someway I can be able to format it?
