Boot up password for a Gateway MX6090

Hi there. I'm posting this for a friend of mine who's effectively locked himself out of his laptop. At first I thought he meant BIOS password or the Windows Login password for a user account, but no. It's actually a password that controls whether the laptop can actually boot up. I'd never heard of such a thing before and I hope you guys have.

The problem is however, is that he's forgotten it and wants to avoid sending it back in to Gateway. Do any of you tech geniuses know of a way to get past this password or to retrieve it? He's just finished his leave and is shipping back out tomorrow. Damn navy boys.

Here is all the information he's given me and I'm sorry if it's not much.

It IS in fact, a laptop! He said it's a Gateway MX6090, whatever that means. He's also fairly certain it's running XP.

I pray that someone can help. Thanks in advance, guys!
