Your "recovery drive" is a partition on your drive placed there by your computer manufacturer. It is used to completely reinstall your Operating System and the pre-installed programs that came with your computer, wiping out everything else.

However, you can split your current partition using a program like Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic. It will resize your current partition and allow you to backup your files on a new one.
