Dude, I just had an epiphany. I was playing around with Mandrake 10.1 when I decided to stop the installation process before it got started by just turning the computer completely off. When I rebooted into Windows, the sound system was redetected! I popped in the Asus CD and was finally able to reinstall the original sound drivers, along with the CMI Audio Config control panel applet. Now everything works like it should.
Evidently, through all the bios upgrades and downgrades, I had never actually cycled the system completely off. It seems like that is the key. I probably should have known that, but that little bit of info would make a good readme file to package along with bios updates, huh?
