There's no good reason for the cable to be browned on the edges as far as I can tell. I DID see a used replacement cable for sale on Ebay (unfortunately the auction had ended by the time I got to it) but the picture also seemed to look a little brown on the edges. It might just be the a result of a lot of heat that the screen gives off?? I'm really not sure.
I did get the new inverter, however, which ended up not being the problem. I'm still stuck with a screwy looking screen. It's kind of the equivalent of trying to watch cable channels on TV that you don't pay for - the lines are all squiggly and you can't read the screen.
I'm tempted to try a new ribbon cable as that is the only thing left that I can think of. Clearly the problem was resolved by moving the screen back and forth and the only pieces with wires are the inverter and the ribbon cable.
I'll check back here a few times to see if anyone has any suggestions before I spend the money on the new cable. Thanks ALL for your help!
